Changing Lines by RJ Scott & VL Locey is book 1 of the Harrisburg Railers series.  This is a fabulous hockey romance by two of my favorite authors.  Jared Madsen is a coach on the Harrisburg Railers and when his best friend’s little brother gets traded to the team, it’s hard to remember why an on ice romance is a bad idea!  I received one copy of this book for review but all opinions expressed here are my own.

Changing Lines Review from a Hockey Romance Fan!

Okay, let me just start out by saying that I LOVE hockey romance books and RJ Scott & VL Locey are two of my favorite authors.  So, I might be a little bit biased but I can honestly say that I absolutely loved this book!

So, quick character review:

Jared Madsen (Mads) had his hockey career cut short by a heart problem.  He is slightly bitter about it but has moved on and made a name for himself as a coach.  I think he definitely has some issues with his loss of career but he doesn’t let it give him a crappy outlook on life.  He loves hockey and is a great coach.  When Tennent shows up on his team, he knows his heart is in trouble.  Ten needs to be off limits but the temptation is just too much.

Tennent is one of 3 brothers who play hockey.  His older brothers look down on the Railers and are frankly a bit snobby about it.  They think Ten can do a lot better than the team he is currently on.  It causes a lot of strife between them.  Although they have quite a bit of competition and bickering between them over a lot of things.  They are brothers….incredibly close and loving but they also butt heads regularly.  The whole family is amazing, honestly, and I loved seeing their interactions.

Forbidden romance:

The major drama here is really the whole forbidden romance thing.  Tennent is Mad’s best friend’s little brother.  That is a BIG no-no in his mind.  He is also 9 years his junior, which makes Mads feel old and definitely too old for Ten.  Add in the whole coach/player angle and you have all sorts of reasons why these guys shouldn’t be together. However, they are drawn together from the very beginning and staying away from each other is hard.

The chemistry:

Let me just say that I loved the slow burn of this hockey romance book.  Mads is older and wiser than Ten.  Tennent is a horny young thing and doesn’t understand this whole ‘wait for a while’ concept that Mads keeps pushing.  It is amusing to see Ten whining and horny.  Mads wants to develop a real relationship and I absolutely love that.  Ten wants a relationship, too….but he just wants the sex that goes along with it RIGHT NOW.  Too bad, Ten, you have to wait!  When they do get together it is just the right blend of hot and sweet.  Very well written. You will never look at strawberries quite the same way….

The emotion:

The biggest emotional struggle was really watching Ten come out to his family.  He had never had a reason to disclose his sexuality before but since Mads was going to be in his life permanently, it needed to happen.  He has to come out several times to different people which maybe made that bit a little repetitive but that is the way real life is, right?  You keep coming out over and over again….

The secondary characters:

Absolutely loved the secondary characters in this awesome hockey romance.  Ryker (Mad’s son) was well written and I really enjoyed getting to know him.  I disliked Mad’s ex-father in law with a passion and am glad Mads finally stood up to him.  Ten’s family was well developed and I loved the camaraderie amongst them.  I wasn’t sure what was up with Stan, the huge goalie.  I hope he gets his own book because you really don’t get to know him very well, even though he seems to play an important part in the book.

Overall, Changing Lines by RJ Scott & VL Locey was a great book.  If you love hockey romance, this is definitely one to add to your wish list!
