Murder, mayhem, and sexy supernatural shenanigans take center stage in FOUR EMPERORS, Evan Allen’s witty, steamy tale of intrigue in the Emerald City. Four Emperors by Evan Allen is a great combination of mystery and paranormal with a bit of romance thrown into the mix. Definitely a page turner that I stayed up late to finish! When a young waiter at Seattle’s hottest nightclub vanishes, Alex Lin—private eye by day, reckless party boy by night—goes undercover to find him. After Alex clashes with the club’s sinister yet seductive owner, Daniel Bitter, he gets swept into a tangled tale that began two thousand years ago in ancient China, then finds himself caught in the middle of a no-holds-barred grudge match between a quartet of super-powered siblings and their shadowy foe. As Alex starts to fall hard for prime suspect Daniel, his increasingly messy and chaotic personal life threatens to bring his entire investigation crashing down around him.
My Review:
In Four Emperors you have a nice blend of mystery, paranormal, and romance that was incredibly well written and grabbed me from the very beginning of the story.
We first meet Alex as an assistant private detective who is young but smart and going undercover to investigate the disappearance of a young, gay, Asian man. His disappearance from the upscale club he worked at (Four Emperors) had his boyfriend seeking assistance from a PI when the police offer him no leads. Little does Alex know, however, that the club owner Daniel Bitters isn’t quite who he seems to be.
Without giving away any spoilers, let me just say that the integration of the Chinese mythology was awesome! You are left to wonder throughout much of the book who is who and why exactly they seem to be able to do things like fly, control people with their mind, and control electricity. Needless to say, Alex is overwhelmed and confused but he seems to take it all in stride (maybe a little too in stride? I think maybe a bit more freaking out would have been more realistic but maybe that is just me!)
The writing was wonderful, the plot engaging, and the mystery of who is who really grabbed my attention. Alex is a great character, albeit a tad bit slutty. I loved the humor that the author injected into the story. I didn’t like Alex falling into bed with people other than Daniel, however. I must admit, I like my romance characters to only be with their ‘love interest’ during a book. While I totally get why Daniel kept Alex at arms length, I really didn’t like Alex being with anyone else either.
Overall, Four Emperors was a great read and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next!
