THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Piper Doone hates filling out bios and makes up, like, 90% of what she puts in them. She was born on a pirate ship in the year 1723 and raised by Vikings in a small village off the coast of Liechtenstein. Her goals include taking over a small country and bribing the people who give out Oscars to retroactively award several to the cast of the 1996 comedy classic Down Periscope. She has a mad passion for mid-century and Polynesian design, New Wave music, and Hayley Mills movies. Her favorite bands are toad the wet sprocket, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Rolling Stones, but when no one’s around, she’s rocking Spice Girls like it’s 1998. She also has a soft spot for Canadian folk god, Gordon Lightfoot. She’ll try to name some obscure indie movie as her favorite, but it’s really The Mummy and she’ll have a crush on Brendan Fraser forever. Her TV weaknesses are Law and Order: SVU reruns and randomly finding terrible Australian and Canadian kids’ shows from her childhood in the 90s. If she could eat only one type of food for the rest of her life it would be Cuban food. Her favorite books in the whole world are The Princess Bride by William Goldman and Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde. She once was an extra on the mediocre 90s Sci-Fi show Seaquest DSV and was robbed of an Emmy that year for best .5 second cameo on a television show. She left a terrible career in professional sports for a more reasonable career in sports marketing because she can have her own spinny chair in her office. She is a proud Southpaw and a Scottish, ginger archer who has heard every Brave joke you can imagine. She has a weird, long-standing crush on Kurt Fuller (of Wayne’s World, Supernatural, and Psych fame) she can’t and won’t explain even though he’s not only old enough to be her dad, he’s older than her dad. She is married to a curly blond haired French-Canadian guy who looks good in a tie and suspenders. They have two kids, a dog, a cat, and three hedgehogs.
Can you give the readers a brief summary of your latest book?
Josh Tucker lives a blessed life—great job, great family, perfect husband, and two wonderful children—but a mysterious man named Adam who haunts his dreams and soon his waking life threatens everything when he stirs doubt as to whether any of it is real. Adam makes Josh question the world he’s taken for granted—as well as the origins of Adam himself. Even if Adam’s claims are true, Josh has nothing to live for beyond his fabricated life—except the possibility of a real man out there somewhere who can love him. Josh is left with an impossible choice: stay in his delusion where he’s assured some happiness or take a great leap of faith for a chance to make a life with Adam.
What genre does it fall in?
Paranormal Romance
Will you share a few words about your latest book, other than the usual blurb?
This novella was inspired by a very weird experience in the Desert that left me in need of a way to process what I saw. I know that sounds like I went into the middle of the desert and did peyote until I saw Jim Morrison or something, but, no, it wasn’t that out there. It was pretty creepy, though, and I needed to make something good out of it. It was almost a catharsis to write this and turn it into a love story.
Give us a little insight into your main characters! Who are they?
Josh Tucker’s story came about from the aforementioned weird experience in the Desert. Having seen the aftermath of how Josh’s story might have ended with my own eyes, I was compelled to turn it into a story with a happy ending. Josh goes through a lot of twists and turns in this story and sometimes they are heartbreaking and sometimes they are uplifting. . Adam was purposely written a little impishly so it’s tough to tell who or what he is and if he’s a good guy or a bad guy.
Will we be seeing these characters again any time soon? Is this book part of a series?
No
Tell us a little bit about your writing style. When and where is your favorite time/place to write?
I write best very late at night sitting on my sofa.
What sort of book do you enjoy reading in your free time? What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?
The last book I read was an old book of First Nations folk tales. I was trying to find a story my mom used to read to me when I was little. I had forgotten a lot of the story and I enjoyed reading it on my own for the first time.
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? Have you held any interesting jobs while you worked on your books?
I have always been in the arts and was always writing, painting, drawing, acting, singing, playing an instrument from an early age, but somehow I ended up in professional sports after a stint at Disney. I’m also an ordained minister who refused to marry anyone until everyone could get married in my state. Because there is nothing better than bringing two people together and then eating a catered dinner (I work cheap and also for food).
What does your writing process look like?
Like the aftermath of a horror movie
Why did you choose to write GLBTQ romance? Why not another genre?
I want to contribute to the normalization of different sexualities in popular culture. I want my children to grow up in a world where, no matter what, there are options for everyone and not just a select few. Even now, in the GLBTQ circles of all places, I am seeing bias against bisexuality from the very people who include the B in GLBTQ when they talk about what they enjoy reading and/or reviewing. I had one reviewer complain that a bisexual character I wrote was either not gay or not straight enough, even though he was specifically categorized as bisexual. I’m of the opinion that the more we get out there and spread the word with great stories and characters in movies, tv shows, books, and other pop culture outlets, the more we expose the world to the fact that everyone deserves the chance to be who they are. I want my kids to be able to feel comfortable and safe if they ever find themselves crushing on someone of their own sex, and the more comfortable everyone else is about different sexualities, the more people will feel comfortable being who they are. And I believe that art–in every form, whether drama, painting, photography, music, and, yes, writing–has always contributed to huge, sweeping changes in society and I am proud to help play a role in any way I can.
One last questions…totally unrelated to books! I am a passionate foodie. Is there one thing in your pantry that you would be horrified for people to know that you eat?
We’re a Scots-French Canadian household. It’s so unhealthy, but I will destroy poutine (French fries, cheese curds, and gravy). I even make my own curds. It’s my go to food when no one is home and I know I don’t have to share.
Thankyou so much for answering my questions. I think my readers will enjoy learning more about you! Good luck in your future writing!
