Finding His Place Blurb:

Sometimes finding your place in the world can lead to love.

Kieran Walters is the illegitimate son of a successful businessman. Despite striving to win his father’s affection, a confrontation that has been years in the making leaves Kieran devastated to realize he will never be good enough. Jealous of the half brother he’s never met, and who most likely doesn’t know of his existence, Kieran vows to find out what makes his brother so special in their father’s eyes.

Darius Jensen manages a nightclub. He loves his job, but is reluctant to commit when given the opportunity to become a partner. His previous foray into business ownership with a boyfriend had disastrous results, and Darius is still paying the price, both financially and emotionally.

When Kieran starts working with Darius at Sparks, Darius shows him it’s not too late for Kieran to realize his dreams—the fulfilling career, a loving family, and someone who loves him for who he is. If only Kieran can convince Darius of the same thing. But before Kieran’s and Darius’s dreams can come true, Kieran needs to come clean with his brother and deal with the resulting fallout… which threatens his relationship with Darius.

My Review:

Finding His Place by author Nic Starr is a short but sweet read with just a touch of drama and a slight curveball ending. A moderately low heat gay romance book with character development and storyline playing a more prominent role than actual romance. It wasn’t my all time favorite book by author Nic Starr but an enjoyable read.

Basic Summary

Basically, Kieran and his mom have been ‘the other family’ for his entire life.  His father is a married man with another family who shows up when it is convenient.  Kieran’s mom is pretty much a doormat who drops Kieran like a hot potato the minute his dad shows up.  It leaves Kieran feeling like he is worth nothing and that no one will ever truly love him.  It also leaves him with intense jealousy regarding his half brother who he doesn’t know except by name.  He decides to learn more about the guy to find out why his dad clearly chose him over Kieran.  He is seriously needy with tons of feelings of inadequacy.

Darius is the manager of the nightclub that his brother owns.  He has been hurt by a past relationship and is hesitant about commitment…in business or pleasure.  He seems like basically a nice guy with serious commitment issues. Kieran gets a job behind the bar (without mentioning the long lost half brother angle) and the two start dancing around each other in interest.

The Drama

So, the drama in the book mainly comes from Keiran’s brother Marcus and his husband Tyler.  Finding His Place by author Nic Starr is part of the Memories of the Breakfast Club Kindle World. Marcus and Tyler’s are Felice Stevens’ characters from the book Second to None. Marcus and Tyler recently adopted Tyler’s niece from some not so great people.  Marcus and Tyler begin to suspect that someone is watching the child and that she is in danger.  I had not read the previous story so when the drama unfolded at the end I was a bit confused as to what was going on.  It is fairly well explained but having not read the previous story, it sort of seemed like it came out of nowhere.

You also have the drama of Kieran’s family secret that will eventually have to come out before his happily ever after.

The Relationship:

There is a gradual buildup of the relationship between Kieran and Darius.  Kieran grows quite a bit as a person from the beginning of the book to the end.  He finally learns that he is good enough just the way he is but it takes him a while to get there.  As he finally figures this out, he becomes more confident of Darius’s feelings and starts looking for a future together.  Darius is very hesitant to open up his heart again (or take a chance on a business deal).  It is a very slow awakening but eventually, he becomes more confident about taking a chance on life and love.

Overall, this was a good story.  It didn’t grab me like some of the other books that author Nic Starr has written but it was still an enjoyable read.
