I was tired—tired of constantly running through equations in my head.
There was a knock at the door. “Topher, are you okay?” Sawyer called.
I scrubbed at my eyes. “Y-yeah,” I said, my voice cracking. Damn it.
There was a pause. “May I come in?”
No. Go away. I-I… I needed him. “Yeah,” I said, small and barely audible. I drew in an unsteady breath and said louder, “Y-yes.”
The bathroom door opened. Sawyer glanced down at my soiled clothes and then looked at me. His gaze softened, flooded with sympathy that made my chest tighten.
