Book Blurb:
Charlie Yates is desperate. It’s almost Christmas and his flight home from college has been delayed. For days. Charlie promised his little sister Ava he’d be home for her first holiday season since going into remission from leukemia. Now he’s stuck on the opposite coast and someone else grabbed the last rental car. Someone he hasn’t even spoken to in four years. Someone who broke his heart.
Gavin Bloomberg’s childhood friendship with Charlie ended overnight after a day of stolen kisses. With years of resentment between them, they don’t want to be in the same room together, let alone a car. But for Ava’s sake, Gavin agrees to share the rental and drive across the country together.
As they face unexpected bumps along the road, can Charlie and Gavin pave the way to a future together?

My Review:
Charlie is desperate to get home for Christmas but is stuck in California when fog, snow and everything else converge to create travel chaos. No way is he spending his first Christmas since leaving for college away from his family. His little sister is finally in remission from leukemia and he needs to be there to celebrate. Too bad the only way to get across country seems to be by car. And the driver of that car happens to be none other than his first crush, Gavin Bloomberg.
Gavin ran away from Charlie in high school after a few stolen kisses. Confusion and a desire to please his parents had him turning his back on his feelings for the other boy. Hostility arose between them but Gavin always had feelings for Charlie that he continued to ignore. It’s not so easy to ignore him when they are stuck in the same car together for days!
Both of these characters were incredibly sweet. When they first start out on their journey, there is a ton of awkwardness and a quiet hostility. They are remembering a shared past that was wonderful at first as best friends and then ended horribly after those stolen kisses. You get dual first person points of view…so as you move chapter to chapter, you read what is going on in each of their heads. You definitely get to know these guys well as the story progresses.
What I really loved about this book was how ‘real’ it was. There was a random thought from one of the guys that they needed to close the bathroom door because it was far too new a relationship to take care of business with the door open. I don’t know why but that just struck me as amusing. Rarely do you find a story that talks about the awkward first weeks of being with someone new. There were several moments like that where the relationship between these two was just so true to life.
These two have plenty of time to talk along the way and they come to forgive and forget. They start to forge a new friendship and along with that comes some serious naked time. Charlie is out at college and has some experience but Gavin is only just now trying to get up the courage to tell people he’s gay. Hormones fly and it is hot and sexy.
When these two guys make it back to their home town, they need to figure out where they go from here. Again, some awkwardness, some honestly, some tears, and eventually a happy for now. They are 18 and college so there is a lot of future for both of these guys and hopefully they get to experience it together.
If Only in My Dreams by by Keira Andrews is a sweet holiday romance. It is honest and real with plenty of tenderness and heat to really build up a beautiful relationship between these two guys. Definitely a wonderful read!
