THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS with CB Lee:

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

C. B. Lee is a bisexual writer, rock climber and pinniped enthusiast based in California. Lee enjoys reading, hiking and other outdoor pursuits. Seven Tears At High Tide is a first novel.

Can you give the readers a brief summary of your latest book?

Kevin Luong walks to the ocean’s edge with a broken heart. Remembering a legend his mother told him, he lets seven tears fall into the sea. “I just want one summer—one summer to be happy and in love.” Instead, he finds himself saving a mysterious boy from the Pacific—a boy who later shows up on his doorstep professing his love. What he doesn’t know is that Morgan is a selkie, drawn to answer Kevin’s wish. As they grow close, Morgan is caught between the dangers of the human world and his legacy in the selkie community to which he must return at summer’s end.

What genre does it fall in?

Young Adult Romance

Will you share a few words about your latest book, other than the usual blurb?

A sweet and earnest romance between bisexual teenager and that blends selkie lore and the vividness of the California coast.

Give us a little insight into your main characters! Who are they?

Kevin can be quite stubborn at times, and act before he thinks, but he’s got a good heart, knows who he is and what he wants, and that helps him steer through a lot of difficult choices in the novel. Morgan has a few special supernatural abilities, like an enhanced sense of smell and the ability to read people’s intentions and their heart’s desires, but I think what makes him special is his positivity and his determination, and especially how he cares deeply about others.

Will we be seeing these characters again any time soon? Is this book part of a series?

Not yet, but I’m open to writing more in this universe!

Tell us a little bit about your writing style. When and where is your favorite time/place to write?

I write whenever I’m inspired, actually! Whether it’s midday or the afternoon or two in the morning, if I’m in a set mood and have a scene going, I’ll keep going. I like to write from home, but if I’m stuck in a rut or something, I’ll mix it up and go write in the park.

What sort of book do you enjoy reading in your free time? What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?

The last book I read was Small Wonders by Courtney Lux, and it was absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a heartwrenching and moving coming-of-age with a side of romance and a wonderful perspective of New York.

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? Have you held any interesting jobs while you worked on your books?

I’ve always wanted to write and tell stories, but I was a youth outdoor program instructor at a few nonprofits and also at a California state park, and after that I was in academia for awhile, working on my PHD in the sciences, and now I work in graphic design. I think all of my experiences have definitely contributed to the way I see the world and how people interact with one another, things that definitely do go into my writing. When I worked with children and teenagers in the various outdoor programs, I learned so much about listening, about people letting themselves enjoy things and really discover so much about their world at the same time.

What does your writing process look like?

When I’m inspired, I’ve definitely gone on and on trying to get an idea down, but usually I go from outline to writing out scenes that strike me and then fleshing those ideas out in order. I use a lot of timers too for motivation, going for twenty to thirty minutes at a time!

Why did you choose to write GLBTQ romance? Why not another genre?

I wanted to write a book that I would have loved to read as a teenager; to be able to see myself as the protagonist in the story, to see that they were like me and could have adventures and magic and happy endings– and I want this experience for today’s teenagers too.

One last questions…totally unrelated to books! I am a passionate foodie. Is there one thing in your pantry that you would be horrified for people to know that you eat?

I’m pretty upfront about everything I eat, I love food and making it. I do keep a lot of butter on stock for when the baking inspiration strikes; occasionally I get the urge to make pie at midnight.

Thankyou so much for answering my questions. I think my readers will enjoy learning more about you! Good luck in your future writing!
