Sometimes holding on means letting go

After giving up on his career as a country singer in Nashville, Christopher Ryder is happy enough performing at the Smoky Mountain Dreams theme park in Tennessee. But while his beloved Gran loves him the way he is, Christopher feels painfully invisible to everyone else. Even when he’s center stage he aches for someone to see the real him.

Bisexual Jesse Birch has no room in his life for dating. Raising two kids and fighting with family after a tragic accident took his children’s mother, he doesn’t want more than an occasional hook-up. He sure as hell doesn’t want to fall hard for his favorite local singer, but when Christopher walks into his jewelry studio, Jesse hears a new song in his heart.

My Review:

Smoky Mountain Dreams takes place in the Gatlinburg, TN area.  Living only a few hours from Tennessee and having been to Gatlinburg in the last few years, I can tell you that the author created a setting that fits this area to a T!  From the over the top touristy nature of the theme park to the beauty of the mountains just outside of town, she did a wonderful job of making this setting come alive!

I loved Christopher’s character,,,both his quiet nature and his desire to find a life partner to share his days with.  Of course, those characteristics were nicely balanced with a bit if fieriness in bed! I wanted to throttle him repeatedly for his lack of self esteem.  Having reached for his dream of making it big in Nashville only to have it elude him, he had a very annoying habit of thinking he was always second best.

Jesse struggled with feelings of guilt over his wife’s accident.  You could really feel his struggles when trying to relate to his daughter and the stress he was under throughout the whole book.  We were given glimpses of his past throughout the book as small flashbacks which really helped the reader understand his character better.

Hearing Christopher’s grandmother’s wisdom in his head throughout the entire book was amusing.  She was quite a unique woman and this was a very well written secondary character in the story.

The passion between Christopher and Jessee is intense but the emotional connection is even stronger.  If you are looking for an emotionally rich book with well developed characters I think you will enjoy Smoky Mountain Dreams.  It is a nice long novel that will just suck you in to the story so make sure you have a few hours to spare!
