Status Update by Annabeth Albert

January 13, 2016 by Devan Huff Leave a Comment

Today I am sharing my review of Status Update by Annabeth Albert. If you like books with just a tad bit of angst and two guys just looking for love, I think you will really enjoy this one.  Annabeth Albert is definitely an awesome writer and created two characters I really enjoyed for this story.  Keep reading for my review, get to know Noah and Adrian, and learn how one reserved professor learns that falling in love is worth a bit of risk!

Book Blurb:

Adrian Gottlieb is winning at life. He’s a successful video game designer with everything a man could ask for, including a warm comfy ride to Denver and a date for his sister’s wedding. But he finds himself in need of a total reboot when he’s left stranded at a snowy campground in Utah. Holiday plans? Epic fail.

That is until Noah Walters offers him shelter for the night and a reluctant cross-country ride. Nothing about the ultraconservative geoarchaeologist should attract Adrian, but once he discovers Noah’s hidden love for video games, the two connect on a new level. Soon, a quiet but undeniable chemistry sparks.

Something doesn’t add up, though. As the miles accumulate and time runs out, Noah must face the most difficult choice of his life. Meanwhile, Adrian must decide whether he’s ready to level up. Is their relationship status worth fighting for, or has this game ended before it’s even begun?

My Review:

In Status Update by Annabeth Albert, Noah has known he was gay for quite some time.  Accepting it and acting in it, however, are a totally different issue. Currently working on writing a book and trying to become tenured at the incredibly conservative college he teaches at takes up all his time.  He doesn’t have room in his life for a gay video game designer in need of a ride home.  He is totally the ‘slightly uptight professor’ type of character but very sweet!

Adrian doesn’t have the greatest taste in men and the last one leaves him stranded in the cold a really long way from home.  Without even a pair of shoes!  He hates having to rely on Noah’s good nature but he really needs to get home for his sisters wedding. Who knew that archaeology professors could be so darn tempting?

Status Update really sucks you into the story. You could really feel Noah’s internal conflict.  Growing up, his father was incredibly harsh.  He teaches at a conservative college and has even signed a morality clause.  He is terrified of losing his family and his job if he acts on his feelings towards Adrian.  But he wants companionship.  Sure, he is curious about sex but he just wants a real, meaningful relationship.  He practically just oozes emotional need.

Adrian is much more confident.  I like that his confidence doesn’t come off as being pushy.   He is sweet to Noah, makes himself useful during their trip, and just generally tries to be a good friend. The physical part of their relationship is slow and tender and honest.  This is what a real relationship looks like, not some perfect idealized version of love.  He is patient with Noah and while the heat is on the low side, it totally fits the story and these two characters.

I love the dogs role in this story.  They are both unique and seem to mirror their owners a tad bit. They add a nice little twist to the book that I really enjoyed.

Things don’t magically turn out perfect for these two guys.  There is so much love and longing between these two guys but they have a few obstacles to overcome in terms of family and careers.  There are tender moments interspersed with amusing and carefree ones.  It is a wonderful balance that really creates a very well rounded relationship. Adrian and Noah will get a happily ever after, they just need to work at it a little bit!

If you are looking for a sweet and tender falling in love story, I think you will be happy with Status Update by Annabeth Albert!
